Raising Awareness for Prematurity Month

November 12, 2018

The leader in raising awareness for premature babies, The March of Dimes, has deemed November "Prematurity Awareness Month". Premature birth is something that has always been an issue. It's not new, however, in the last few years, births before 37 weeks have been on the rise. The key to preventing preterm labor and preterm birth is to understand risk factors and what you can do to reduce those.

There is a laundry list of risk factors. They include:

  • being under 17 or over 35 years old
  • being a smoker
  • abusing drugs or alcohol
  • being a victim of domestic violence
  • working long hours or being on your feet for long periods of time
  • being low-income/unemployed
  • having little to no family support or friends
  • being exposed to harmful chemicals
  • having a previous premature delivery
  • being pregnant with multiple babies
  • being severely underweight or overweight before conception
  • high stress levels
  • multiple miscarriages or abortions
  • chronic problems like high blood pressure or diabetes
  • less than six months between pregnancies
  • little, late, or no prenatal care

More and more research is being done every single day to give babies born before 37 weeks a fighting chance at life. Luckily, a lot of these risk factors can be prevented or fought against in hopes of having a full term pregnancy.

  • Do not smoke, drink, or do drugs while pregnant
  • Make sure you schedule a visit with your doctor as soon as you think you are pregnant
  • Seek treatment for chronic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes
  • Reduce stress by any means possible and keep yourself in a safe environment
  • Talk to someone, a family member, friend, and try to find some support for yourself and your baby
  • Wait at least 18 months in between pregnancies
  • Eat and drink healthy for yourself and your baby, as well as take prenatal vitamins

Being a Momma is such a big responsibility and blessing. Taking care of yourself throughout your pregnancy is your first step to taking care of your sweet baby! Get enough rest, eat well, don't stress, and make sure your doctor is informed of any issues and concerns.

I asked some NICU Mommas for advice, and this is the bulk of what I got from those who have been through premature labor and preemie life-

*Accept help. Let your family and friends help when they ask.

*Take care of yourself- follow doctors orders, eat and sleep as well as you can.

* Do not blame yourself! Take care of your baby as best as you can and have faith.

* Interact with your baby as much as you are allowed.

* Relax, Take a deep breath, & be positive.
